In order to put this into perspective of what you think you control and what you actually control, lets talk a
little about your personal computer...
The Computer...
The computer you are on can be used to very clearly demonstrate the importance
of muscle memory as it directly relates and controls your golf swing.
As we sit and weave our creative magic on our computer screen, we only see the one particular screen that we are
working on.. 99.99999% of the computers memory is down on its hard drive. Everything on the screen, even though
we are stuck on this one screen, is really being created by the programs (arificial intelligence) and memory on our hard
drive.
Just as we are concentrating on one particular screen or task, our conscious mind is limited to that particular
screen or thought process.... while all of our memory or intelligence is below the surface on our hard drive, and only
brought up to our screen, or thought process, as we need or use them. Our CONSCIOUS MIND is the SCREEN.
The HARD DRIVE is our SUB-CONSCIOUS MIND and our MUSCLE MEMORY.
After we have a mental understanding of the controlling fundamentals, we go to the driving range to try them out.
We quickly find out that it is impossible for us to bring fifteen or twenty screens up at the same time. It doesn't work.
The reason is again fundamental to learning the swing. The swing, in its incremental parts, has to be put on our hard
drive, committed to muscle memory, so we can concentrate on the whole instead of the parts.
The only way to accomplish this is just like the computer. It has to be programmed, one bit at a time, and
transferred to the hard drive. That way, just as your computer, when you need more information or another screen,
it magically comes up from your hard drive. But, unless your hard drive has been programmed properly, the wrong
screen or action will come up and constantly frustrate you and your swing. Your actions will be screaming default.
1) You can program, control and check your grip before every swing.
2) You can program, control and check your stance before every swing.
3) You can program, control and check the start of the back-swing before every swing.
4) You can program, control, feel and check the back-swing during each swing.
5) You can program, control, feel and check the initiation of the down-swing on every swing.
6) You then lose control...................
That's it. Once you have initiated your down-swing, either correctly or incorrectly, whether
with big muscles or the hands, whether you cast or attack from the inside, you have lost control. The down-swing itself,
the collision with the ball, the extension, the follow through and the finish are reflex actions, not controlled by you,
but controlled by the beginning actions of the swing that you can control. The swing is a chain. Each action, or link,
is connected and controlled by the preceding link and follows, or is pulled by the preceding link, quite naturally.
As in any chain, each link is TOTALLY CONTROLLED by the preceding link only. Many think they can control the
club head as it sweeps through the hitting area at 100 mph. The club head weighs more than 100 lbs at 100 mph.
Yet still, you have golfers trying to pronate their wrist at impact or otherwise manipulate the club head at such
tremendous speeds. IMPOSSIBLE!! The laws of physics, that is action vs reaction, has taken over.
All is lost if you have not prepared properly. You are either trapped in a good swing or trapped in a bad swing.
Good or bad, you have lost control.
In order to build an effective golf swing, it is imperative to understand that if any singular link is not programmed
and put on the hard drive, it is absolutely impossible to have a connected swing. Leave out one link and you will
never have a chain. Anytime you try to pull up a screen that has not been programmed to the hard drive, your screen
will flash... default... default... Anytime you try to pull up an athletic action that is not in muscle memory, that has to be
screened and thought about in order to execute, your body will react just like a computer....... default... default...
default...
This principle is important enough to repeat and beat into our conscious and sub-conscious mind.
Each link or part, has to be programmed and installed in your muscle memory before you go to the next link.
Any link not on the hard drive and in muscle memory will always cause a default. Each link has to be programmed
and installed one at a time. No short-cuts. Sure, it is a lot of hard work. The end result however, is a beautiful,
effective, knowledgeable golf swing that will literally last a lifetime.
Nick Faldo, once dubbed by the British press as Nick Foldo, had a reputation of folding under competition.
His swing would not stand up to stress. Nick took more than a year out of competitive golf to re-learn the golf swing,
one link at a time. He understood if he put this new swing under stress before it was down deep in his muscle
memory, it would come apart. His muscle memory would take over and he would have his old swing back.
No, he would take the time necessary to program or install, his new swing deep into his muscle memory before he
would put it under the stress. After Faldo begin to play again, his swing had become a thing of beauty.
His swing was a connected athletic motion like a chain. The more stress he put on it, the tighter the chain got.
The swing is a compact athletic move with no wasted motion. It is a smooth, fluid, beautiful and very effective swing.
But in order to build that swing, Nick Faldo had to take the time to build that swing and put each part down deep
into his muscle memory. If you think it was important and necessary for a world class player like Nick Faldo to take
the time necessary to rebuild his swing, what about you? Can you just read and mentally understand the
fundamentals without the sacrifice of physical practice?? Do you really have to take the time to install those principles
down deep into your muscle memory? You know the answer. Anything of value is worth working for and worth waiting
for. There really are no short-cuts. And no Band-Aids. A little bit of stress and sweat and any band-aid comes off.
Very temporary.
The choice is really yours. The only person who can keep you from acquiring a golf swing that is dependable, repeatable and knowledgeable, is you. It takes mental understanding of the controlling principles, the patience of practice and the logical programming of each link down deep into your muscle memory..
